Dentistry/Sores in the mouth

Question
I am 25 years old, and I have just recently begun going to the dentist regularly.  The last time I went was when I was eight years old.  Anyway, I have always taken good care of my teeth, and so I only had 2 cavities that needed to be taken care of.  Other than that, my teeth were great.  However, I have noticed that since I have been going to the dentist, I have started to get little white sores on my gums, and teh inside of my lip.  They're tiny, and they don't really hurt unless I put pressure on them.  I've had three since December, which is when I started going to the dentist, and before then I never had one in my life.  I just wonder if the dentist somehow irritated the inside of my mouth, or got some kind of bacteria in me?  What is usually the cause of these sores?  I had one on the very top of my tongue last week that was so painful that I could only eat soup.  I don't know if this was the same kind of sore as the kind you get on your gums.  I have had bumps on my tongue before, but in the past they have always been on the side of my tongue, not the top.  Anyway, I just find it odd that all of a sudden I am getting these, when this has never been a problem for me before in my life.  The only thing I can think of that has changed is that I've started going to the dentist.  I would appreciate any answers you might have.  Thanks!

Answer
Dear Anna:  I would really like to see these bumps to know what they could be.  The rest is only speculation.  If you are getting them one at a time, they are likely Aphthous Ulcers (canker sores).  These are innocuous painful sores that go away in 1-2 weeks.  Harmless unless they become very large.  Less likely, if you are getting multiple little sores, all at one time, they may be a reaction to something that was put into your mouth, or something that is irritating your gums and tongue.  Even less likely is that these are a form of Herpes infection.  Something may have activated this virus that is generally dormant within all of us.  Beyond that, I would contact your dentist, doctor or dermatologist when these sores erupt, and show him/her.  Good luck.  dd

Experience

Having attained over 30 years of clinical experience in private practice in Michigan, in 2001 I was re-certified by taking and passing the Florida State Dental Board Examination. After moving to Florida, I spent nearly 10 years re-honing my skills while working as an Associate Dentist for several large dental groups. In September, 2004, I was appointed Adjunct Clinical Professor at Nova University's College of Dental Medicine. I am certified in placement of Mini Dental Implants, and I am Director of The Florida Implant Center (floridaimplantcenter.com). On March 1, 2010, at the age of 62, I began all over again by buying a dental practice near my home in the Fort Lauderdale area. As sole owner and Chief Dental Officer of the new Nob Hill Dental Center (nobhilldentalcenter.com), I can now carefully provide dental care to patients who care, all within a caring, joyful environment. Over my career lifetime, I have provided thousands of diagnoses, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, periodontal treatments, TMJ therapies, partials, dentures and extractions, and dozens of implants for my patients. The only aspect of dentistry with which I have very little experience is orthodontics.
