Dentistry/Strength of teeth

Question
I am considering braces for fixing my bite (for an aesthetic reason), but have concerns about whether my teeth are strong enough to endure the trauma that braces will inflict. I visited two orthodontists, both of whom were very eager to sell me braces, but had less of an interest in the condition of my teeth and whether I was a GOOD candidate for braces in the first place.

I am in my early 30s and have a bruxing habit that I was recently informed of (I have a nightguard now.) As a result of the bruxing, I feel that my teeth are in a weakened state.

Many of my teeth have small chips and two of my teeth have broken (I have a crown on one molar and a large filling in the other, opposing molar). I have some slight mobility issues with my two front teeth (they move 1mm from side to side). I have been told before that my roots are short and I have a little bone resorption. It also appears to me that my gums have receded a bit over the years (I do get regular cleanings and floss daily).

I have read about the experiences of some orthodontic patients whose teeth had cracked during the bracing process. If you were my dentist, what would you recommend?

THANKS!

Answer
Hi Dan

If your teeth and gums are healthy, then orthodontics shouldn't be a problem. Ask your regular dentist what he/she thinks - they won't be trying to 'sell' you orthodontics, but should have your overall dental health as their priority. It sounds to me like you care and have a well-maintained mouth. In which case orthodontics will be fine.

Expertise

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
