Dentistry/TMJ

QuestionI have TMJ, but it is getting pogressively worse. My jaw pops many times daily, and my back and neck hurt almost constantly. I know that I have been under a lot more stress lately, but I do not know what I can do to get this under control better. Any ideas?
AnswerI never had my jaw pop. I use a nightguard. Only get one from a dentist that is hard. STress causes clenching which then in turn causes the chewing muscles to get tight. This in turn can cause pain in the neck, head, facial muscles and even in the teeth and gums. Here are some things I have done:
l. the alpha-stim 100 is a pain device. Look at www.alpha-stim.com for info.
2.acupunture: very helpful in relieving all the pain.3
3. any relaxation exercise is very helpful. Tapes and CDs are good for this. Also meditation tapes are helpful.
4.Medications: Muscle relaxants on a temporary basis and sometimes anti depressants can be helpful if the pain is bad.
5. TMJ "Gel". this numbs the pain on the facial area. You can also try over the counter meds like Zostrix.
6. Physical therapy: ultrasound which is administered by a physical therapist is great.
A dentist that treats a lot of TMJ and knows a lot about it is hard to find but worth it when you do. I know someone good in NY if you live near NY.
Hope this helps.
(Try to reduce your stress as TMJ can be a result of it)
