Dentistry/TMJ and dentures

Question
Hi.1year ago I had scaling of the teeth done. Then went on to have dental work done. 2 root canals with crowns and one crown. The 3 teeth were all together. Shortly after the precedure i started showing signs of Tmj. I had the crowns adjusted several times. Still i have these headaches and jaw tightness. I went to a new dentist 4 weeks ago. He said my upper gums were in very bad shape. Enough to require gum surgery. Which he said I probably wouldn't be satisfied with the look of my teeth after surgery.I'm thinking about getting upper dentures. My bottom gums are in relatively good shape. Maybe another deep cleaning and very good oral habit to keep them healthy. Oh! Also he says my bite goes a little to the right, Which he thinks is causing the tightness in my jaws. My concern is getting dentures with the tmj symptoms. What kind of dentist would be best to go to for this. maybe a prosthodonist? Any help would be appreciated. Oh! also I'm 52. No young thing. :)Jo

Answer
Jo Marlene,

The selection of a dentist is a very personal thing.  A prosthodontist has received extensive training in making dentures and other tooth replacements.  However, not all prosthodontists are equally proficient in managing TMJ problems.  I suggest looking for a general dentist or prosthodontist who is skilled at both replacing missing teeth and managing TMJ problems.

It sounds like a good place to start your search is by talking to your new dentist.  Ask questions.  Be honest about your concerns and what you are looking for.  It is possible that you may not have to look very far or that he/she may be able to make an appropriate referral.

Jo Marlene, I wish you well.
