Question
My TMJ is much worse after dental work because of having to keep my mouth wide open so long. Unfortunately, I have to be under IV sedation for major work and they put a bite plate in to prop it open.

How do you relieve the pain afterwards?

Answer
Dear Chris, I had the same thing happen recently while undergoing sedation for dental work.  I find that applying cold packs to the area helps.  Also opening the jaw and Then massaging the painful area helps me.  Advil can stop the cycle of pain, but don't take too many as that can make the pain worse (according to a study done a few years ago).    A doctor can give you an Rx for a muscle relaxer - they can be helpful - but I never take more than a couple over a period of two days.  I have a pain device that works great for me.  It is the alpha-stim 100.  They have a web site www.alpha-stim100.com You need a Rx to order it.  Good luck.
