Dentistry/Teeth Whitening

Question
Hi, I'm a 22 year old female, I used to have really bright white teeth 4 years ago and got compliments with ppl asking me what toothpaste i use and etc...then college life and its stresses got the better of me and i started drinking lots of coffee and 2 years ago I started smoking too...I'm trying to quit smoking and I drink less coffee now...

My teeth right now aren't really too stained or yellow, I've been using whitening toothpastes to prevent the really bad kinda stains...but they look a bit yellowish/greyish, 'dull' looking compared to the teeth i used to have...that's the best way i can describe it...dull. although my friends tell me its not that noticeable...they just tell me 'its not really white, but its not bad', but i'm just not happy with it...i'm considering using at home bleaching system...with the tray and all that (i'm on a budget and it's the cheaper option), under a dentist's supervision...my question is, how 'white' will my teeth get after bleaching? is it possible for me to get back the bright looking white teeth i once had? do have any kind of advice or suggestions for me?

Thank u so much!

Answer
Dear Fifi:  College stresses certainly can bring a dullness to your teeth, as you have proven.  You can get your white teeth back with bleach.  But before using the bleach, have your dentist or hygienist professionally clean your teeth, so your bleach can work on the enamel, rather than bleaching the plaque and stain, which will darken much sooner after bleaching.  Then easy on the coffee and other items that might stain your teeth.  And continue brushing with a whitening toothpaste.  You can always repeat bleaching.  I recommend bleaching each day for one week, then off one week.  Good luck.  dd
