Question
How often should one get their teeth cleaned by a hygienist?

Answer
John,

It depends.  A young healthy person with a clean dental history should see a hygienist every 6-12 months.  Someone with a history of medical problems, tooth loss, gum problems, tooth decay, or multiple fillings/ dental work may need to be seen more frequently.  Some individuals benefit being seen every 2-3 months.  I suggest you speak with your dentist about a schedule that best fits your circumstances.

Best wishes John,

Steve

Experience

I was the Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School in 1981. I served as a General Practice Resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 1981-82, and have been in private dental practice since that time. My practice is now located in Owings Mills, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. My studies at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Florida has enriched my practice and my patients. It was there that I learned the true meaning of excellence.
