Question
I was sent to see a root canal doctor for sensitivity to hot, cold and sweets.  I was examined and found out my tooth was cracked. I went back to my dentist and had a temporary crown put on and for the past few days I have been having a little discomfort which advil has worked on.  Is it normal to have a little bit of pain with the temporary crown?

Answer
Dear Maria,

Although postoperative pain of the type you describe is not uncommon, it cannot be presumed to be innocent. It is difficult to distinguish "normal" postoperative pain from pain that reflects more ominous conditions, such as pulpitis or vertical root fracture-- at least, based only on its subjective nature.

You should report all symptoms to your dentist, who can determine their significance...
