Dentistry/Temporary Crown - Painful & Bleeding?

Question
Hello Dr. Steven,

I recently had a temporary crown put in place so that I can get
the permanent one put in two weeks later. It is now the second
day that I've had this temporary crown and my outer gum near
the crown is very irritated and keeps bleeding. Is this normal? It
also looks like a layer of my gum is coming out. I'm not sure if
this is normal or whether I should go back in. Please advise?

Answer
Natalie,

It is common for the gum to be somewhat irritated after placement of a temporary crown.  Sometimes, patients tend to shy away from the area when cleaning their teeth because it is tender and may bleed readily.  Unfortunately, this can allow germs to infect the already irritated gum and make things worse.  It is very important to aggressively clean the gum around a temporary crown with toothbrush, dental floss, and other cleaning aids.  This may make the gum bleed for the first week or so.  Accept that as a sign that you are being thorough.  When using floss, take care when removing the floss from between the teeth near the temporary crown.  It is usually best to let go with one hand, and side it out the opposite side with the other hand.

If you have been doing these things already, the gum seems more than just slightly swollen, or you continue to have concerns, it is best to see your treating dentist.

Best wishes,

Steve
