Dentistry/Toddler with chipped tooth

Question
Tonight my husband and I noticed a small chip on our 18-month old daughter's front tooth.  We think it occurred today or yesterday.  We are unsure because she never indicated a problem.  It does not seem to bother her.  I've read that I should take her to the dentist; however, it is a holiday weekend and I don't think I'll be able to get an appointmet until Monday.  Is there any danger in waiting if she seems okay?

Answer
Karen,
Without seeing the chip, I cannot give you any definitive answers. But if it is small, then waiting will not hurt a thing. It is not bothering her, so most likely it is very small. Make sure you do not see anything red or pink in the broken area...this would mean it is deep and close to nerve. But again, since she is not complaining, it is probably very small. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Jeff Dalin, DDS

and by the way, if she is only 18 months, your general dentist may not be able to handle her. you may need to take her to a pediatric dentist.
