Question
Hi
I have a couple question regarding tongue crib/cages.
I am getting them installed in my mouth this week and I was just wondering...
I had braces for a year and a half and my teeth are straight and we have yet to
correct my bite so I am getting a tongue crib
How long will I have these on?
Are they going to affect my speech?
Will it show a lot when I open my mouth? (It is on the top)

I am able to keep my tongue from thrusting during the day but when I sleep
my tongue pushes against my top teeth.

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Jon,

The length of time you will need to wear the device will depend on just how long it takes to break the tongue thrust habit. The time required for behavioral modification such as the breaking of a habit varies greatly from patient to patient, so there is no way to provide a precise estimate. Plan on wearing it for a few months.

Yes, these devices can affect speech, at least temporarily, until your mouth accommodates to it.

The degree to which a tongue crib is conspicuous depends much on the way it is constructed, which can vary. However, it is usually no more visible than the braces you wore previously, so it should not be too much of a challenge for you for the relatively brief time you need to use it.

Hope this helps...
