Dentistry/Tooth Pain

Question
Hi! Dr. Bornfeld. I've replaced the white resin filled inlay with an amalgam filling because I 've had a constant tooth ache for three weeks. The general dentist said that I don't need any root canal treatment, but there could be a crack in the teeth, so the amalgam filling would make my teeth much better. After one week later, I'm still in pain and there is a gum swelling without any blood. The dentist says that I need to adjust to this pain. What should I do? Is it normal that my gum is swollen after a filling? Does this imply any root canal case? I can't bite anything.
Could you please answer it? If I do any crown on it, it would be better? In fact, I want to do a root canal because of a pain, but the dentist says that there is no inflammation. What should I do?

Answer
Dear Jennifer Lee,

As I mentioned last time, the presence of gum swelling is compelling evidence for an infection, despite your dentist's assertion to the contrary. I also take issue with his suggestion that you simply "need to adjust to this pain", which, if you have accurately reported his phrase, is just plain inconsiderate on his part.

Your symptoms are suggestive of the need for root canal therapy, and I again recommend that you consult with an endodontist (root canal specialist) for this purpose.

Good luck, and have a Happy New Year!
