Question
Dr. Zelig,

I have a tooth that lost its filling perhaps six months ago and I have been unable to have it fixed- for various reasons- and it has continued to decay. A large blemish has broken out on the side of my nose. Is it possible that the decaying tooth is spreading an infection? Do decaying teeth necessarily spread infection or can they simply decay and fall out?

Thank you for your attention,  Bryan B.

Answer
Bryan,
Thank you for your question. It of course is difficult for me to diagnose the blemish on your nose without seeing you, but it is possible. Teeth infections DO spread to other parts of the body. The teeth are a direct line to the inside of your body. Teeth with extensive decay can cause infections in your jaw and even lead to fever. So my advice to you would be to get to a dentist ASAP before this tooth becomes a bigger problem

Good Luck,

Joe Zelig
