Dentistry/Tooth destiny - out or ?

Question
I just went to my dentist today to get a root canal treatment of my upper left most behind tooth. It was not a painful too but had prior filling.
First I got the x-rays taken and then she started drilling the old filling out.
Suddenly she said she could not put a crown on it because it was too close to the next tooth and she also complained that some of the cavity was slightly below bone level.

So her recommendation was to get it pulled out.

I have compared with photos of teeth that got crown hightening and I think my tooth is in better shape than what I've seen from these photos. And it sounds from her like even she did a crown hightening she would not have space for a crown due to the next tooth. But isn't it possible to drill the tooth smaller to allow a crown to fit?

I have all my teeth intact and don't want to lose any.

Answer
Hi Pete,

You bring up a very good question. From what you are describing you might be a candidate for crown lengthening. Of course, since I am not seeing you it is impossible for me to tell you anything definative. You should get a second opinion from another dentist or see a periodontist. It is always better to save a tooth if it is possible, than to pull it.

Best of Luck,
