Dentistry/Tooth knocked out of place

Question
One of my front teeth was knocked backwards 7 days ago and the root of the tooth went forward protruding into my upper lip and I can feel it almost in my right nostril.  I went to the dentist and he was able to match up the bottom of my right front tooth with my left front tooth, but the injured right front tooth root protrudes way out and hurts my gums above the tooth.  I can feel it when I put a finger in my right nose, it is very uncomfortable and it is poking into my upper lip.  Is there any way an oral surgeon or anyone can reposition the tooth root back to where it was before the tooth was knocked out of place?  My dentist says nothing can be done, but I honestly don't see how I can continue going through this pain and discomfort with the tooth root being in the place it is in right now.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Dale: Yes.  Your tooth can be repositioned.  However, when your dentist repositioned the tooth, the root should have moved into its proper position also.  My concern is that you may have lingering infection in the area you describe, which feels like a root under your nose, and which is not healing properly.  See another dentist or an oral surgeon for an independent consult.  Good luck. dd

On March 1, 2010, at the age of 62, I began all over again by buying a dental practice near my home in the Fort Lauderdale area. As sole owner and Chief Dental Officer of the new Nob Hill Dental Center (nobhilldentalcenter.com), I can now carefully provide dental care to patients who care, all within a caring, joyful environment. Over my career lifetime, I have provided thousands of diagnoses, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, periodontal treatments, TMJ therapies, partials, dentures and extractions, and dozens of implants for my patients. The only aspect of dentistry with which I have very little experience is orthodontics.
