Dentistry/Veneers

Question
I'm 17, from Iowa, and I have weak teeth.  My mom was told by one dentist this is because the town I live in used to add too much flouride to the water back in the late 80's, so kids around my age have "tea stains" and get cavities easily.  I badly want veneers or Lumineers.  From what I understand, Lumineers are cheaper.  What is the usual price range for Lumineers or veneers?

Answer
Kali,

Your Mom could be half right.  The injestion of too much fluoride can lead to "tea stains" and pitting of the teeth.  However, the risk of tooth decay is actually reduced, despite the discoloration and surface changes, owing to the anti-cavity properties of fluoride.

Lumineers is a brand name of veneers.  Fees vary widely, depending on where you live, the number, size, arrangement, shape, and color of the teeth, as well as the complexity of the problem.  As you can imagine, the skill of the dentist and technician selected will also significantly impact the fee.

Best wishes,

Steve

I was the Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School in 1981. I served as a General Practice Resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 1981-82, and have been in private dental practice since that time. My practice is now located in Owings Mills, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. My studies at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Florida has enriched my practice and my patients. It was there that I learned the true meaning of excellence.
