Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS - 11/3/2007

Question
I was diagnosed with an abscess root canal today.  If I look in the mirror, it is the 5th tooth (from center) on the left lower side of my body.  I was prescribed Ibuprofen 800 mg and cephalexin 500 mg to take for a week until I go back to have it worked on.  I was told that the Ibuprofen would help with the pain and relieve the swelling-5 hours later no change!
Is there anything you can recommend to help with the pain.  I am a single mom with a 2 year old and need to sleep at night-with this pain it is NOT going to be a good nights rest.
Should I ask the doc for something stronger-my jaw, neck and temple or aching and I need some help!

Dear Colleen,

If ibuprofen isn't providing sufficient pain relief, then certainly you should ask for stronger pain medication, unless for some reason your dentist is not properly registered with the authorities to prescribe narcotic medication.

I strongly recommend that you contact your dentist and request stronger pain meds. One week is a long time to be in pain, and your dentist should be well aware of that...
