Question
hello there,
i have had braces for 2 years now and started smoking about 2 months ago. somebody told me that i will have yellow staines from smoking after removing the braces. is that true?
thanks

Answer
Dear Nattalie,

Braces do pose a physical obstruction to effective oral hygiene, and smoking does tend to stain teeth. Taken together, the probability is great that there will be noticeable staining of your teeth-- perhaps even before the orthodontic appliances are removed. However, smoking stain is a surface deposit, and does not penetrate the tooth surface. At the conclusion of your orthodontic treatment, a thorough professional tooth cleaning should be able to remove any accumulated tobacco stain from your teeth.

Hope this helps...
