Question
hello there,
i have had braces for 2 years now and started smoking about 2 months ago. somebody told me that i will have yellow staines from smoking after removing the braces. is that true?
thanks

Answer
Nattalie,

Smoking discolores teeth just like spraying paint on a white wall.  Braces act like a piece of masking tape on that wall.  Once the masking is removed, the previously masked surface will be a different color than the rest.

As you are probably already aware, smoking is a life threatening habit associated with increased risks of heart attack, stroke, cancer, gum disease, low birth weight births, and a whole host of other medical conditions.

Smoking is addictive; the longer you smoke, the more difficult it is to stop.  You will look better, smell better, and feel better in the long run if you have the guts to quit now!

Nattalie, I wish you well.

Experience

I was the Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School in 1981. I served as a General Practice Resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 1981-82, and have been in private dental practice since that time. My practice is now located in Owings Mills, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. My studies at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Florida has enriched my practice and my patients. It was there that I learned the true meaning of excellence.
