AboutDr. Randolph Myerson Expertise Please limit your inquiry to questions about orthodontics (braces) and children's dentistry. I am both an Orthodontist and a Pediatric Dentist, having been trained in both of these dental specialty fields. Orthodontics is the dental specialty that treats problems of tooth, bite and jaw alignment using braces and removable appliances. Pediatric Dentistry is the dental specialty also known as dentistry for children, which deals specifically with the dental problems of this special age group from infants to adolescents. I am also experienced in Forensic Dentistry, the application of dentistry to law enforcement and identification using dental records.

Prior to that I served for three years on the Cleft Palate and Cranio-facial Reconstruction team at Children''s Hospital of Philadelphia and was an Assistant Professor of Dentistry at University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. I also served as a dentist in the U.S.Air Force, stationed at Andrews AFB in Washington, DC.
Organizations I am a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, as well as a member of the American Dental Association and the Dental Society of the State of New York.

In 1978 I received both my Certificate in Orthodontics from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and my Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Children''s Hospital of Philadelphia after completing a three year Teaching Fellowship in Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry in 1978.
Question I'm 14 and should be getting medal braces soon.I think what I have is called a cross bite.I have alot of questions about braces,And was hoping you could help me out. Ok here they go....
Will they turn yellow?
People have told me it hurts really bad.Have you found that to be true?
Do I have to brush and/or floss a lot more?
How long do you think they will stay on? My Orthodontist said it will take 2-3 years.
How offen do they have to be tightened?
Will braces effect the way I talk much?
What colors are best to get?
Thanks so much.
Answer I have found that clear braces can discolor. Metal braces usually do not.
Most individuals experience discomfort on chewing for a day or two after the braces are put on and after adjustments. The amount of discomfort varies from mild to annoying depending upon the individual.
Oral hygiene is more important than ever and more difficult that before braces. It's one of your most important responsibilities with braces.
The time it takes for treatment to be completed depends upon the complexity of the bite problem and on patient cooperation wearing elastics, preventing breakage and oral hygiene. Your orthodontist's estimate is an average time and is based on excellent cooperation and progress. It could take longer without excellent cooperation on your part.
Braces are adjusted as needed and this varies from one part of treatment to the next, although appointments must be kept every 4-6 weeks depending on your orthodontist's recommended schedule.
Most patients adapt to the braces very quickly and don't find difficulty in speaking.
Colors are a matter of personal preference.
Good luck.
