Actually, I am a dentist completing a general practice residency and studying to take Part II of the National Dental Boards. As we speak, I am reading through questions from a NDBE 2009 Part II exam released by the ADA. I found a question pertaining to your issue. The question is as follows:

Alveoplasty following closed extraction is usually performed with:

a) a bur

b) fingers

c) a rongeur

d) a bone file

Now, I was shocked and amazed because according to the answer key (which was also provided by the ADA) the correct answer is fingers. I have never done an alveoplasty with my fingers but I pray that this little piece of information helps. I would love to hear how this turns out for you.

I would also like to know why this may be the answer. If average dentists dont use it. It should not be an answer.
