Dentistry/my friend has a tooth problem

Question
My friend chipped one of his bottom front teeth and when the piece that chipped off came out of his mouth the piece that would be facing the center of the tooth is black. What does that mean?

Answer
Dear Adam,

In all likelihood, the tooth chipped because it was weakended by tooth decay.

I recommend that your friend schedule an appointment with his dentist so that the condition of the tooth can be properly assessed and repaired. Tooth decay that is sufficiently severe to cause structural breakdown is also potentially deep enough to cause infection in the pulp (nerve), and it would be best if this complication can be averted by prompt treatment.

Hope this helps...
