Dentistry/gum pain

Question
Hello! I'm not sure if you would know the answer to this question, but there is no orthodontist that I can ask on this website so hopefully you can help me! I am 17 years old and I've had braces for about a year. My orthodontist was trying to bring down some of my teeth on the left side of my mouth, so I've been wearing very tight bands on two of my teeth. Recently I noticed that the gums on top of one of those teeth has been bleeding a lot more when I brush. It looks like maybe part of my gum on top of that tooth has been growing on the tooth (it's not even close to being completly covered, but it is enough to kind of hang off and it is a little painful) I dont know what it could be, and I'm a little worried about it. My next orthodontist appt isnt for two weeks-should I schedual an earlier appt?

Answer
Erica,

Overgrowth of the gum is most often due to the presence of an irritant.  This is generally the result of a loose band or inadequate home care.  I'd suggest you brush and floss the area aggressively.  It will probably bleed and feel sore when you do so for the first week or so.  This tells you that you are now getting into areas that were previously missed.  If there is no improvement within 10 days, or if any part of the braces feel unusually loose, see your orthodontist.

Best wishes,

Steve
