Question
I am a 20 yr old female I have alway had great teeth.  When I got pregnant my teeth started to act up bleed and one of my eye teeth had the gum grow almost so it covers more than half of the tooth!  I though it might go away but my baby is 4 months old and its still the same.  On top of that the other matching tooth on the other side the gum seems to be receeding!  What is causing the gum over growth/ recession.  Please Please help me find some answers.  I am waiting for my heath insurance to become active again.

Answer
Hi Samantha,

First of all, congratulations on the baby! Regarding your gum recession, pregnancy can do strange things to the gums. Usually the damage reverses itself, but sometimes it does not. During pregnancy your immune system is suppressed, so your body can't fight the bacteria that cause gum disease effectively.
My advice to you would be to see a periodontist in your area. There are some procedures that can reverse the gum recession and stabilize the gum-line. You should also have some x-rays of the area to make sure that there isn't any bone loss around those teeth.

Don't worry, it sounds to me like your situation is treatable, but don't wait on this. Go see a periodontist.

Best,
Joe Zelig
