Question I know ou probably think this is really stupid but I can't go to the dentist because I am too scared. I used to go every 6 months but the fear has got so bad I haven't gone for a year. I understand the importance of looking after your teeth but it was so difficult to physically force myself to actually sit on that chair the last few times, I don't think I'll manage again. I come to the verge of tears thinking about it. It came from my phobia of needles, they fill me with such terror I want to run from the room when anyone even mentions the word. I can't afford a hypnotherapist to help me deal with this fear, and I don't know what to do. I have heard there are drugs you can be given to stop any fear just before you go- is this true? I really cannot stress enough how it terrifies me.
Answer Stacey - You are not alone in your fears. Many patients I have seen over the years have expressed similar fear and apprehension. You are correct that hypnotherapy can assist in reducing your fears, but often it may not be enough. You are also correct that there are medications that can assist in reducing the fears.
Sedatives and antianxiety medications are available from either your dentist or your physician. These medications will dull your fears and assist you in going forward with dental treatments.
Again, talk to a dentist or physcian. If you have any other questions do not hesitate to contact me again.
