Dentistry - temporary fixed bridge

Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS - 12/4/2006

Question
I have a temporary 6 tooth fixed bridge. It's too replace my two front teeth that were damaged years ago. I had two crowns (caps) on my two front teeth but last month they became loose and I had to have them removed.

My temporary bridge (temp cemented in) is causing me tons of pain. I've been back to the dentist three times and he's trimmed the edges around my gums but my gums are still sore and swollen. My bite is also completely off with my upper teeth resting well behind my lower ones, sort of like those little dogs with an underbite. I refuse to smile because my teeth look crooked.

Can the dentist remove the temp bridge and reapply it so it fits correctly? I'm assuming I shouldn't be in this much pain. I get my permanent bridge on Dec. 13th.

thanks,
Caroline

Answer
Dear Caroline,

Although your dentist may be able to try seating the bridge in a different position, the discrepancy could just as easily be the result of a poorly shaped temporary bridge as it could be from being re-applied improperly.

If you have been back to your dentist three times and he still hasn't managed your complaint, he (and you) should consider looking elsewhere to resolve the situation. If your dentist cannot (or will not) attend to your complaint, you should consider seeking a second opinion from another dentist for an impartial assessment of the work you are receiving.

Good luck!
