Dentistry - wisdom teeth extraction

Expert: Joel S. Teig, DMD, FABOMS - 12/2/2006

Question
I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted 4 days ago. 1 tooth was broken the other 3 were ok. I now have a sore throat and very sore tongue & it is hard to swallow. I have noticed a bumb or bruise on my tongue back next to the tooth that was broken. It also is very tender to the touch on the outside of my mouth under the jaw again next to the tooth  that was broken. My tongue is very sore when I move it away from the tooth that was broken and it even makes my ear hurt mildly. How long shloud this soreness last?Is this normal? What can I do? I have no pain chewing only when I move my tongue. Thank you for your opinion.

Answer
Jason - During access to the removal of a wisdom tooth, the tongue must be pulled out of the way.  If not the tooth is prone to being cut or abraded.

In your description either of the two reasons are possible.  I would suggest two treatments that will quickly help you heal.

First of all begin a regimen of warm salt water (teaspoon of salt in glass of warm water) rinses for 5 minutes 4-5 times per day.  Try to concentrate the salt water solution far back in your mouth towards the injured tongue.  Secondly, I would contact your dentist who performed the surgery and advise him of the discomfort, restriction of movement without pain and soreness under the jaw.  The dentist should place you on an antibiotic just to quell any early infection which be developing.

I hope it resolves quickly,  If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me again.
