Actually, from what I know. And this is true.
My Uncle, Charlie Goldberg coined the nickname "The Orange Crush" for the Broncos. he owned a large wrecking company in Denver. He painted the wrecking balls orange that demolished buildings.hence the orange crush. Charlie, and his brother Jay were huge fans/supporters until their deaths some years ago. I remember being offered to sit with them in the skybox next to Elway. That was in the mid-to-late 70's.

ahh what a truly brilliant and amazing man. I miss Charlie terribly as I know his daughter Brittany(my cousin) misses him also. I remember being young and seeing orange crush banners flags everything in his sports room. He was Charlie Bronco known for his never ending loyalty to the Broncos as well as the "Orange Crush" era.

Yes, they were called the Orange Crush Defense, but the quarterback at the time was Craig Morton, not John Elway. John Elway wasn't drafted until 1983.

I do know know if Charlie and Jay came up with the name or Jay's wife Sally. I am Jay's grandson, and still a season ticket holder. But it is family lure that we came up with the name, and Yes Barrett Lumber, had orange trucks and painted their wrecking balls Orange starting in like 75'. Sally use to make soup her famous chicken soup for players in the 60's and early 70's when they had a cold. Stuff like that just doesn't happen anymore.
