Subject: odd skin wrinkles?

Question
Hi thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I am 25 years old and have recently (past 3-4 months) noticed that I have developed deep wrinkles on the inside (palm side) of my forearm. This first started on my right arm about 2 inches from my wrist. The wrinkles are semi deep and go diagonally. They are now extending almost to my elbow. I have also noticed a patch starting on my left forearm in a similar patch, now it is about 3 inches long. Also in these areas are small bumps that are under the skin (same color as my skin. The areas feel slightly rougher then the surrounding areas, do not itch, and the skin also appears slightly darker in this area, though not noticeably unless one is looking. I have no other wrinkles on any part of my body, do not get much sun exposure, and this are bring on the inside of my forearms, gets especially light sun exposure. I do not smoke.

I do not know if this could possibly be related at all, but this developed about 8 months after I had a pregnancy complicated by severe Preeclampsia. any insight you could give on this would be helpful. It has been suggested by other that it could be anything from eczema (which I had as a child, and my daughter now has and does not look like this) to an autoimmune disorder effecting my skin since they can be related to the development of preeclampsia as well, to a thyroid problem.....I have made an appointment with an internist but it is not for several weeks. Any insight would be appreciated.

Answer
There are a number of possibilities for the skin lesions that you describe.  The lesions could be nothing more that just eczema or dry skin.  The lesions could be an allergic reaction to something that got on your arm.  This is a condition called Morphea which is linear and slightly indented.  The treatment of Morphea is Protopic Oinment which is by prescription.  Without seeing your skin, it is difficult to make a diagnosis.  I would visit your local dermatologist instead of your Internist.  If the dermatologist is not sure of the diagnosis then he/she could do a biopsy to help with the diagnosis.
