Dermatology - Sunburn

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 10/28/2009

Question
When I was 7 I was severely sunburned on my stomach (I am currently 15), a couple days later a spot under my belly button began to peel and soon turned white while the rest of my skin was tan. It is still white today and I don't know what to do about it. Is there any chance it will go away? What should I put on it?

Answer
Since 8 years has passed, I doubt that the white area of the skin can resolve. The skin could have been damaged by the burn. This could also be an area of early vitiligo which is a depigmenting disease. Since I cannot see the skin, I recommend that you visit you local dermatologist for the correct diagnosis.
