Dermatology - what could that be?

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 10/30/2009

Question
i don't have any bacterial diseases or anything but i just want to know what could cause my ‘vulval lips’ to be darker than the rest of my body and even darker than my pubis area? and i really want to know how to fix that and what are the means to do so...please i need help as soon as possible...thank you in advance.

Answer
If you have had this condition throughout your life, the increased pigment is genetic. If you have had irritation in the vulval then your condition is called postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. This means that the irritation of the skin caused an increase in pigment. Treatment for this condition is with bleaching creams like the prescription Tri-Luma.
