Dermatology - Fungal infection

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 11/8/2009

Question
Dear Mr. Fisher,

I have a fungal infection (something similar to microsporum/tinea/ringworm). I think I got infected by my bunny.

I'd like to ask is this transmitted by air (and not only by touch)? Is it safe to keep the bunny in another room and just not have any contact with him for a while? I will take him to the vet, but my biggest concern is can I get infected by air?

Thanx so much.

Answer
Fungal infections come from animals, other humans, and the soil. By touching the infected skin or coming in contact with fungal spores causes the infection. The problem you have is that the fungus can have a spore form that can get in the air and land on surfaces. Thus, you need to treat the rabbit as soon as possible.
