Dermatology - Itching and swelling of old scars

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 11/8/2009

Question
I have two keloid scars on my forearms from over a year ago, and they have started itching and swelling. There are huge knots under the scars. I also have a swollen lymph node under my armpit and a persistant cough. What could this be?

Answer
The problems you describe may not be related. Keloid scars do not cause swollen lymph nodes unless there is an infection. If you have an infection then you would need antibiotics to treat this condition. The persistent cough could also be an infection. Thus, the best thing to do is to visit your internist and get the proper diagnosis and treatment. Raised keloids are treated with intralesional cortisone injection.
