Dermatology - Random itch with no rash

Expert: Uribe - 11/4/2009

Question
Off and on for almost a year now, I have experienced random episodes of excessive itching without a rash. The itching will be in areas on my thighs and buttocks about the size of my palm, or the palms of my hands, or the back of my neck.  They never occur in two places at the same time, but almost always "move" from one place to another...when the itching stops on my thigh, my buttock will start itching, when that stops, my palm, etc. I've tried cortisone creams, antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Allegra) and none seem to help.  When the itching starts, there is no external redness or rash, but if I itch it, it becomes red, raised, and hot to the touch, with almost a burning sensation.  This isn't a daily situation, but happens about 2-3 times a month and I haven't changed medications, laundry detergents, or eaten anything prior to these appearing. My doctor has told me he probably can't help me unless I happen to be having one of these when I'm in the office, which is unlikely.  Any ideas?
