Dermatology - boils in sweat glands

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 11/5/2009

Question
I have experienced boils (filled with blood/pus)in the armpits and in the groin area. I have also had them at the belt line. My doctor said that it is an infection in the sweat glands. What causes this type of problem? He said that we can cut it out or try medicine. I am on clyndamyacin oral. I currently have two that are open and oozing. Can this discharge be contagous to others? Can it cause other boils for external contact or do they come from within only? While on medicine, approximately how long does it take to clear up?

Answer
You have a skin condition called Hidradenitis Suprative which is genetic. Treatment is with oral antibiotics like Doryx or Solodyn. Intralesional cortisone injections also help into the "boil". The best treatment and most effective is Enbrel 1 shot per week. This medication is very effective but difficult to get as it is costly and is off label for this treatment.
