Dermatology - new mole

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 5/29/2009

Question
I am a 27 year old blonde hair blue eyed male. I just noticed a brand new mole on my upper right butt cheek/lower back. It looks like a feckle and does not have any mass as it is completely flat like a freckle. It is about a centimeter big. Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Answer
You should be concerned if the mole has asymmetry in regards to the pigmentation, if the mole has an irregular border and is very dark, if the mole has different colors associated with it, and if the mole is evolving meaning that it has changed. Sometime the changes in moles are subtle so I would recommend that you visit your local dermatologist to make sure of the diagnosis.
