Dermatology/What Kind of Chemical Peel Can Be Used on Dark Complexioned Skin to Reverse Long Term Tanning?
I am of Indian origin and long term sun exposure and tanning over a period of many years has left my face much darker than my neck and torso. My face is a medium - dark brown while the rest of my body is a light brown. What kind of chemical peel would be suitable to even out my complexion so that my face is returned to its original colour. I am under the impression that medium to deep peels are contraindicated for darker skinned individuals.
If peels are contraindicated altogether, do you have any other recommendations to address this issue?
When most people set out to find ways to lighten their skin, they are not looking to change their skin color over their entire body.Instead, what they are seeking to do is to lighten spotty skin caused by exposure to the elements, old age and the settling of melanin which gives the skin an uneven color and tone and makes people feel less attractive.
There are a number of ways to lighten the skin and here are some skin lightening treatments that people have tried or used more or less successfully.
Changes In Lifestyle
Of course we all know that some changes in lifestyle are necessary if you truly want lighter and more even skin tone. Avoiding the damage done by the ultra violet rays of the sun, may not make that uneven skin tone disappear but, it is essential to keeping it from getting worse. Avoiding going out when the sun is strongest, wearing a hat and protective clothing and using sun blocks are lifestyle changes that will help prevent future discoloration of your skin by the sun. However, many people take lifestyle even further and make other lifestyle changes that may or may not help lighten that skin tone.
Some people believe that by increasing the amount of Vitamin C and foods containing Anti-oxidants you can lighten your skin tone and make it more even. While both vitamin C and fruits and vegetables high in anti-oxidants are good for your health and may help to remove toxins from your body they really arenít going to do much for melanin production which is often the cause of discoloration.
Increasing sulfur intake is also supposed to be effective according to some people and so adding foods high in sulfur such as eggs, garlic, organ meats, cauliflower and onions is supposed to help lighten your skin. While this change in diet may or may not help, the ordinary person would have to increase their sulfur intake by 400% in order to see any lightening of the skin. Not only may eating this much sulfur rich food be difficult but, increasing your sulfur intake by that degree may cause problems with your health.
Drinking more water is also a means of flushing toxins out of your system and therefore can make your skin look overall brighter but, may not actually lighten those uneven color patches.
Home remedies on the other hand have in many cases been proven to be effective at evening skin tone and lightening dark patches. Making masks from potatoes, oatmeal and tomatoes, lemon juice and egg whites all can lighten skin if applied several times a day over a long enough period of time. The problem is that making up these home remedies are often time consuming not to mention using them two or three times a day for 15 or 20 minutes at a time.
The truth is in todayís busy world most people do not have the time for prolonged beauty treatments to lighten and even their skin and those who do really donít want to deal with the messiness these treatments entail. Who really wants to walk around the house with oatmeal or potatoes falling off your face, neck or behind your knees?
Laser Treatments, Chemical Peels
Laser treatments and chemical peels have been used for years to remove port wine birthmarks and other skin discolorations. The problem with these treatments is that they are often highly expensive, require multiple treatments and pose risks that many people are not willing to take. And in the case of Laser treatments they may actually lighten your skin too much leaving those dark spots lighter than the rest of your skin tone. They can also sometimes prove to be painful and cause scarring as well.
Skin Lightening Products
Skin lightening products have also been shown to be successful, some of them better than others. If you get a good skin lightening product made of all natural ingredients you will find that you can lighten your skin for much less than those laser treatments and chemical peels, more successfully and faster than with chemical peels and a whole lot more conveniently and with far less mess than with those home remedies.
