Dr. Fisher,

Thank you for all you do here on All Experts. You are a blessing!

I've been suffering from severe jock itch for close to 3 years. Ironically, which is just about as long as I haven't had health insurance :) I've tried everything under the sun and nothing has helped. I don't know if its my lack of water, too much coffee or whatever but my jock itch never goes away. I have broken skin on the folds and these sting really bad in the shower.

Here is what I've used so far...
OTC:
Zeasorb "Jock Itch" - Miconazole Nitrate 2%
Lotrimin "Athletes Foot" Powder - Miconazole Nitrate 2%
Kroger "Athletes Foot" Spray -Tolnaftate 1%
Rx:
Nystatin & Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream -
Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream

I had some extra Solodyn Er 115mg tablets that I took as well.

I'm now taking Bleach baths, don't even know if this helps, but sometimes it does.

My old roommate used to have severe athletes foot, I know it was bad because he had to take pills to get rid of it, but he never took them because we were still in "college mode" aka drinking more than usual.

Thank you for your help and I hope this helps other seemingly lost causes like me!

Answer
Prevention of Intertrigo
Most preventative measures involve reducing skin to skin contact and keeping the area dry.
Weight loss to reduce the size of fat folds
Wear loose, soft underclothing
Apply antifungal absorbent powder to affected areas daily
Wash affected areas with soap and water daily.

The medication I use to treat this condition is Alcortin A or Vytone Cream 1% or Dermazine.
