Dermatology - dry scalp

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 7/1/2004

Question
Could dry scalp be the cause of excessive shedding of the hair?

Answer
The answer to your question is usually no. Dry scalp is called Seborrheic Dermatitis and is easily controlable with prescription medications. Your local dermatologist can help you with this scalp condition. Hair loss can be caused by: thyroid disease, hormonal abnormalities, birth control pills, medications, stress, medications, severe stress, genetics, systemic diseases like lupus to name a few. I recommend that you get blood work from your doctor to make sure you do not have a systemic cause for you hair loss.
