Dermatology - facial skin irritation

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 12/15/2005

Question
Dr. Fisher,

I'm 25 years old and am 5 months along in my 2nd pregnancy. About a week ago I used a face mask to help clear up an acne break out that was starting. When I put on the face mask it burned so bad that one I had it applied I washed it all off immediatley. Ever since I have had a tingling sensation on mostly the left side of my face and it is starting to look rashy. My face feels ruddy and I am breaking out worse than before I applied the face mask. I tried to use my normal acne face wash a couple days after using the mask and it irritates my skin even more. Is there anything else I can use or do to help clear this up? I want to have that pregnant woman glow not a face full of pimples.
Thank you,
Jennifer

Answer
Just for your information, if your acne flares while prenant you will most likely have a boy. Most prescription oral and topical medications are contraindicated while pregnant. The only prescription topical that I write for pregnant women is Emgel which is a topical erythromycin.
The mask you used most likely caused an irritation to your facial skin. I would first try over the counter Cortaid or Cortisone 10 twice a day for 5-7 days and if that does not work you will have to visit your local dermatologist for a stronger topical medication. Cortaid and Cortisone will help reduce the inflammation caused by the mask.
