Question Hey Alex. I'm about to be a senior in high school and I've had this question for a long time. If I major in Graphic Design, will I be able to have a career in Game Design? This may be a stupid question but humor me please.
Answer Howdie Omatayo,
This is really an open question. By definition, Graphic Design is print work, like graphics for flyers, magazines, cards, etc. So if that's your focus, then you probably wouldn't be one to do games since for video games it's all about interactive media.
Now, you could still do games. I've known plenty of Graphic Designers who are in the game industry now. The work they do tends to be background graphics, 2D environmental art, texturing, and more than anything, GUI design. So it's definitely still a good possibility you can do work in games.
I'd recommend doing a Google search for the 2008 Fall Game Career Guide. It just recently came out a few weeks ago, and for a change it's free. In there you will find a lot more details about graphics-related fields in the industry.
Hope this helps, and good luck in your last year in high school. Take care.
