Digital Photography - digital camera memory

Expert: Sara Bella - 1/30/2008

Question
Hello , Ihave just purchased a Sony a100 digital camera and in the mail order catalogue it is said to have 32Mb memory , built in ,....so why do I need a memory card ?
(Memory stick duo )  best regards , John Foreman ,

Answer
The memory stick is meant only as a backup, in case your card fills up and you need to shoot just a few more photos.  This camera is capable of shooting high quality images.  RAW files can be quite large, from 1 to 5Mb EACH.  You wouldn't be able to store many of these on your 32Mb stick.  A memory card is also more reliable and convenient.

Technically, you could change the settings on your camera to take  really low quality images (small) and then you could save more photos to that 32Mb chip, but then why would you spend the extra money on this nice Digital SLR?  If you aren't concerned with quality or reliability, why not buy a little cheapo digital camera?

I recommend that you buy a memory card or two.  Personally, I always carry 3 when I am shooting, but my camera creates very large images.   and it is quite easy for me to fill those up in a few hours.

Hope I cleared this up for you.

Sara
