Subject: memory card formatting

Question
When I put my my SD 512MB memory card into my Samsung digital camera it came up on the screen that the memory card needs to be formmatted. Will this delete all the photos I have saved on it. Is there anyway I can make sure the photos stay on the card?

Answer
If you format the card, the photos will be deleted.  Why is the camera requiring that you format the card?  Is it the first time you have used it in this particular camera?  Can you bypass the formatting in the menu?  I am not familiar with your particular camera, so I'm not entirely sure what you have going on.  Have you consulted your manual?

You should take the images off the card.  Put them on your computer or a CD.  Once you format the card to that camera, you should not have to do it again and the next time you use the card, the images already on the card will be safe.
