Digital Photography/Nikon L820 or Sony DSC H300

Hi Vipin,

I am planning to buy a new camera, i am an amateur photographer. I have a Budget of 15K. I have two models in mind, the Nikon Coolpix L820 and the Sony Cybershot DSC H300.

Please let me know which one i should buy.

Hi Rajat

Wish you a very Happy & prosperous New Year!

Both the models that you have mentioned, are point and shoot cameras with high zoom and little or no manual controls. The above mentioned budget would allow you the following options:

1. Canon SX500 (16 MPX, 30x Optical, CCD Sensor, HD Video, Lithium Battery)
2. Sony H300 (20 MPX, 35x Optical, CCD Sensor, HD Video, AA Battery)
3. Nikon L820 (16 MPX, 30x Optical, CMOS Sensor, Full HD Video, AA Battery)
4. Fujifilm S6800 (16 MPX, 30x Optical, CMOS Sensor, Full HD Video, AA Battery)

A CMOS Sensor offers better quality Images in low light, while offering Full HD Video (HD Video in CCD).

Out of the above, the Fujifilm offers the maximum features & best quality of Images & Video, while allowing Full manual controls. The Nikon also offers a CMOS Sensor & Full HD Video, but does not have any manual control. The Fujifilm also looks very much like a DSLR & feels sturdier in the hand as well. It has an amazing zoom with effective Image Stabilization & decent low light shooting capability. All of this translates into a versatile camera which is good for Nature, Wild Life, Indoor & Outdoor photography.

If you do not mind the size, the S6800 offers a better grip than small cameras and also has manual settings. The Manual settings allow you to control the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, Metering etc. Once you get used to the camera, you can graduate on to the manual setting to get a shot exactly to your liking. For example, while shooting wildlife, you can set the shutter speed really fast to capture a fast moving animal, which Auto might not understand.

All in all, if you don't mind the brand, the Fujifilm S6800 is the best value for money with the best quality & features. If you want to stick to the 3 brands you mentioned, only the Nikon offers CMOS Sensor & Full HD Video (without manual controls). If you were to choose between the Canon & Sony, the Sony would offer more features & a proper DSLR like feel whereas the Canon offers more manual control & a lithium battery.
