Subject: Converting Jpeg pic file to Singer Sewing file

Question
I have a Nikon D70s and have taken a picture and saved it to the compact flash card in the camera.  I need to get it converted to a file type that my Mom's Singer XL5000 will take on a SD card.  I have talked to several shops here in town and it costs about $70 for the first 1000 stiches and more if the conversion is more that 1000 stiches.  Then they only will create the file type that their machines will take.  Bottom line, need a low cost way of converting pic to file type her XL-5000 will take and embroidery on a golf shirt.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Theresa,

Unfortunately, I don't know much about embroidery software, but did find the following:
http://sandscomputing.com/page2.html

It purports to be able to convert images and text to a standard format for use with many embroidery machines. The listed cost is about $50.

You can also try asking Singer about what software they recommend, and if you need to do anything to the image you took before trying to convert it. A photographic image may be very difficult to reproduce on an embroidery machine, so you might need to simplify it. A good vector tracing program would help; Illustrator or Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php?lang=en) are good choices. Inkscape is free, and appears to have good user support. This will let you trace the important parts of your image and simplify it for conversion. However, this will take some time.

Good luck with your search!

-Scott
