Subject: short term disability

Question
I am getting ready to have shoulder surgery..and will not be able to work for atleast 3-4 months..is there such a thing as short term assistance and how do I go about getting financial help?

Answer
Sue Ann, to qualify for social security disability you have to be disabled for at least six months.  There are several states that take part in a program that provides for temporary disability.  They are California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico and Hawaii.  Other states may have a different program, but you would have to contact those states.  I don't know of other federal programs, except those that govern things like TANF, Temporary Aid to Needy Families - if you have children, but there are very strict income limits.  Talk to someone in your community, such as Catholic Social Services, that is well versed in what is available where you live.

Good luck and I hope this helps,
