Disability Law - Changing SSDI from SSI. Possible?

Expert: Kyla Kelim - 7/16/2008

Question
I was born with a rare strand hemophilia and was never able to work, i have been on the SSI program, but having my own family now, it's very hard to make ends meet. Since i haven't put enough money into the system, how can i ever meet the requirements for SSDI? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Daniel, unfortunately the only ways to qualify for SSDI are as follows:  1) to have enough work credits to qualify - in this case you have already stated you did not or 2) collect from a deceased or disabled or retired parent's record if you were disabled as a child AND be unmarried AND have your parents supporting you.  It doesn't appear that this will work either.  I encourage you to visit http://www.hemophilia.org and related advocacy sites for additional assistance.

I hope this helps,

Kyla Kelim
