Disability Law - autism

Expert: Kyla Kelim - 8/29/2008

Question
my 3 yr old son was just diagnosed with autism he is on the high end of the spectrum and still able to function would he be eligable for ssi

Answer
Sarah possibly, SSI will depend not only on whether he meets the disability criteria, but also whether the family's income is low enough.  He needs to have a severe limitation in one area of his development, or marked limitations in two, and then meet the income requirements.  Check also with your local school board and Easter Seals/United Way/March of Dimes and others to get as much help through early intervention programs that you can.

I hope this helps,

Kyla Kelim
