Disability Law - Diability for Unexpected maternity

Expert: Kyla Kelim - 9/9/2008

Question
What options are available in south carolina to assistance with the bills when you have the unexpected to happen while you at home with extended leave from work with no pay.

Answer
Ms. Gilliam, pregnancy is not a covered disability.  I do not know what South Carolina might have available regarding state coverage.  You need to check with a local attorney to see if you have any rights.  You do have the right to keep your job, generally, depending upon the size of the company you work for, but the leave time will be unpaid unless the company has a policy of paying during maternity leave. Other options are to go to various organizations in your area that would have some assistance available, such as food stamps and related types of assistance. Try the county welfare office and Catholic Social Services.  Between those organizations, they should be able to provide you with a list of services available.

I hope this helps,

Kyla Kelim
