Question
I was diainoses with stage 3 a breast cancer in april 08 i applied for social security disability in june after undergoing a mastectomy i have over 8.5 months of chemo and9 weeks of radiation,i can no longer work i'm sick all the time lost my hair and work for over 35 years as a general manager in the fast food industry,my question is how long will it be before i can receive some income coming in i've gone thru all my savings spending over385.00 a month for cobra insurance going broke fast.my other question once you filled and are approved is it retroactive from when you applied?
                 sincerely
                 Beth

Answer
Beth, there is a five month period from the date of onset of disability prior to your being eligible.  So, you should be retroactive to September of this year if approved.  I cannot tell you how long it will take.  There are expedited procedures.  You should also consider applying for Medicaid if you will qualify.  Medicare will not pick up for 2 years from the date of disability.

I hope this helps,

Kyla Kelim
